The Royal Occultist Primer is an introduction to the world of Charles St. Cyprian, the Royal Occultist and his assistant, Ebe Gallowglass. The Primer was first released in 2012. It has now been updated, with cover art, additional stories and extras.

The Primer contains six previously published stories–“Krampusnacht”, “Sign of the Salamander”, “The d’Erlette Configuration”, “Iron Bells”, “Wendy-Smythe’s Worm” and “Deo Viridio”–which makes for roughly sixty-odd pages of free occult detective fiction.

The cover art is by the ever-superlative MD Jackson. The Primer also includes a link to a free preview of The Whitechapel Demon, the first Royal Occultist novel, as well as a brief introductory essay on the origins of the characters.

  1. I have really, really been enjoying this PDF. I followed it over from the pjfarmer.com website. I have been wondering, if it isn’t spoilers, do you consider the Royal Occultist and Wold Newton universes to be the same, or perhaps parallel, or perhaps some other interpretation?

    • Glad you’re enjoying it! And ‘parallel’ is perhaps the best way to describe it, if only to play it safe. I’ve included some Wold Newton references, where I thought it was appropriate, but it’d take a better researcher than me to figure out whether or not the RO fits neatly into the Wold Newton universe.

  2. For myself, I’d be fine with the Great Detective appearing in both universes, ne’er to meet. Unless they did, of course.

  3. Good news! My local library ordered and bought and has now received “Whitechapel Demon” into regular circulation! As the requestee, though, it is waiting for me to check it out. I knew I had fallen on financial limitations myself, so on a lark I submitted a purchase request. Lo and behold… 😉

I realize I’m a bit late to the party, but wow, I’m so in love with TRO universe! You brought together my 3 favorite things: HPL influences, a UK setting & supernatural/occult/mystery storyline. Please keep this series alive, it’s bloody fantastic!
Sincerely, a new & eager fan in the US!
